WOOD (Yorkshire)Richard Wood (1480-1553)
married Christable. He and his younger brothers John and Edmund were cloth
weavers in Sowerby, Halifax, Yorkshire, "on the bleak, treeless moorlands
of the Pennine Hills, where fertile soil was at a minimum." Richard Wood (c1515-bef.1590)
m.26 Jul 1540 Margaret Annes Ambler (c1510-c1600), daughter of William Ambler, in
Sowerby. Most sources indicate that Jonas "Halifax" Wood and
Jonas "Orem" Wood are not related. So the connection between
Richard and James needs further study and verification. Edmund Wood (bef 6 Mar
1545/6-c1616) m.15 Sep 1572 Alyce Edwards; m.4 May 1573 Janet Hurst, daughter of
Humphrey Hurst; m.13 Oct 1583 Margaret Heird, lived in North Orem, Halifax,
Yorkshire. Died in Shelf, Halifax, Yorkshire. Edmund Wood (c1575-bef.7
Jul 1663) m.21 May 1611 Martha Lum (7 Jan 1580/1-bef.1635), daughter of
William Lum/Lome and Agnes Bairstow of Lighthazles, Sowerby, Halifax. Edmund
was from Oram, Yorkshire, and he was married and his children baptized in
Halifax, Yorkshire, where he was church warden 1604-5. He
sailed for America 23 May 1635 on the James, and arrived in Boston 17 Aug
1635, a widower with five children. He was an original settler of
Springfield, MA, in 1636, Wethersfield in 1637, Stamford in 1641, and was a
proprietor of Hempstead, Long Island, in 1647.
Jonas
"Oram" Wood (28 Sep 1614-12 Jun 1689)
m.25 Feb 1641/2 Elizabeth Strickland (1619-aft.1683), daughter of John
Strickland (1584-1672) Jonas called "Oram" to distinguish him
from his cousin Jonas "Halifax" Wood (1613-1660), see above.
Jonas Oram lived in Springfield MA, Wethersfield CT, Stamford CT, Hempstead LI,
Southampton, and finally Huntington Long Island, and his will mentions surgeons
tools. Phebe Wood (1647-1697) married Mar 1667 Captain
Epenetus Platt
