Samuel Wheatley (1670-1740) married Mary Shirley, born in England, died in Tyrell Co, NC. supposed father of:

Shirley Whatley (1685-27 Aug 1779) married about 1710 Mary Courtney Cherry.  Born in Jamestown, VA,  In 1719 he married, secondly, Rebecca Wharton, sold property in Hanover County, VA, and moved to Orange County. In 1739 he worked the lands of Alexander Spottswood, moved to Granville Co, NC 1754, and received a grant in Bute Co, NC, in 1759, which became Warren County in 1779.

NOTE: Just in case you got too excited, this is WRONG! The Internet gives good clues, but you absolutely MUST check the original sources. The first sources I saw agreed, so I posted this here. But Michael Whatley's will, written in 1788, does not mention a daughter named either Mary nor Nancy. He could not have overlooked his youngest daughter, age 18 and unmarried. The major source which I found listed as "proof" was an untitled book by R Francis Carroll. I found a copy at the Library of Congress. It makes no mention whatever of a daughter Nancy nor Mary nor any hint of a Pierce/Pearce connection.
There IS very likely a relationship of some kind. They both came from north-central North Carolina and settled in Wilkes/Oglethorpe/Green County, Georgia. The difference between "Whatley," "Wheatley" and "Watley" is not significant.

Mary Watley (1770-1852) m. Randall Huckaby Pierce (1769-1853) were in Burke Co. Georgia by 1789, Wilkes Co, 1790; and came to Mississippi by 1814 with his brother John and the Loving, Lott, Furr, and Slay families. Randall and Mary Nancy settled on Little Bahala Creek, Lawrence Co.
