TOWNSEND/TOWNSHEND

Sir Ludoric (Lodovicus) of Townshend (fl 1100) married Elizabeth de Hauteville of Roynhom, Norfolk, daughter and heir of Thomas de Hauteville, who received his lands from William the Conqueror.

Walter Atte Townshende, sometimes referred to  as Walter Ad Finem Ville, Ad Exitum Ville, or Atte Towneshende, all traditionally meaning "at town's end," but in Norman dialect could be "town holder."  The silent "h" and the final "e" were dropped about 1500 as superfluous, returning to the noble branch of the family soon after 1580.  see The Townshend Family of Lynn in Old and New England by Charles Henry Townshend, 1882

John Townsend (c1615-5 Oct 1668) m.1639 Elizabeth (1621-1684). She is said to have been the daughter of Alexander Montgomery (1576-1610) and Elizabeth Coles, daughter of Thomas - OR - assumed to have been the widow of David Montgomery and the daughter of Robert Coles (d.1655) and therefore the sister of Ann and Deliverance, who married John's brothers.  But that would mean that John and Elizabeth's son Thomas would have married his aunt.  She is also said to have been born in Ireland. But John and Elizabeth were probably married before moving to New Amsterdam, and John's brothers were married after their removal to Rhode Island about 1648, where the Coles lived, and they were married there.  Nothing is proven.
John Townsend, as "Jan Tonson," took up 8 acres of land in New Amsterdam  before the 1643 difficulties with the Indians on Manhattan, and was one of the original patentees of Flushing in October, 1645.  He was always at odds with the Dutch over issues such as the selection of officials and having to pay tithe to the Dutch Church.  While not a Quaker, he and his brother Henry were arrested and fined for countenancing Quakers, so they, with their brother Richard, moved to Warwick, Rhode Island, where all three became members of the Provincial Assembly.  They were among the patentees of Rusdorp, later renamed Jamaica, Long Island, in 1656, having purchased the land from the Indians. They were again arrested on the same charges, and moved in 1661 to Oyster Bay, then under English control.   Elizabeth's will was dated 10 May 1671.
