TATE

The first record we have found of Joseph Tate (July 1746-28 Oct 1821) is his marriage on 17 Mar 1772 to Elizabeth Pattison (18 Oct 1747 - 18 Dec 1833) at Middle Octoraro Presbyterian Church, eastern Lancaster County, Pennsylvania by the circuit-riding Pastor John Cuthbertson. [Their names are also spelled Tait and Patterson.] I have copies of letters dating back to a reply to Mattie Tate, first cousin of my great-great grandfather, dated 1874, searching for Joseph Tate, her great-grandfather. COPY . The 136-year-old mystery remains unsolved. We do know very many Tate families he is NOT related to. Joseph does seem to have some connection to the Tates in western Pennsylvania. In 1806, Joseph had power of attorney from the estate of John Cree of Westmoreland Co, PA, to collect debts from three people in Rockbridge County, Virginia. Joseph and Elizabeth were still in eastern Pennsylvania in 1773 when their son James was born, and in Maryland in 1775 when their son Thomas was born. Joseph was in Augusta County, Virginia, in 1778, settling three miles east of Fairfield. When Rockbridge County was formed in 1779, he was in that area, buying land in 1781 and 1793, selling that land in 1796 and September, 1810.  In 1782, he was taxed for 3 horses and 6 cows. He remained in Rockbridge County until 1811, when he moved to 1000 acres of land he had purchased in April, 1810, on Caesar's Creek in Massie Township, Warren County, Ohio. The land is among the Military Tracts, but we have found no military (Revolutionary) service for Joseph. There is evidence that his son Thomas had visited the area in October, 1805, buying a peck of salt at Brown's General Store in Dayton. Son John S. Tate was involved in a court case in Dayton in 1808. Joseph was elected Elder at Sugar Creek Associate Presbyterian Church, Bellbrook, Greene Co, Ohio, in 1815. He died and was buried in Warren County, but was later moved to the public cemetery at Bellbrook. The inventory of his estate lists a considerable library for the time, mostly being books that one would expect to be owned by a Presbyterian minister. But we have found no record of his ever serving in that capacity. Joseph had a brother James Tate (1756-1831) buried in the same cemetery. He had been active at the Bellbrook Church when the congregation moved from Lexington, Kentucky, in 1804.  There is some indication that both Joseph Tate and James Tate attended Princeton University in 1770, as the University Archive has notes that Joseph owed for his tuition in 1770 and James for tuition and room for 1770-1773.

James Tate (1756-1831) brother of Joseph, married 17 Feb 1783 Mary Lloyd (1763-aft.1810) in Botetourt Co, VA, and was living in Scott Co, KY when his son was born in 1787.  He moved to Bellbrook, Ohio, about 1804.  His wife Mary was living with her son Thomas and three daughters in Franklin Co, KY in 1810, and they continued to live in Franklin County.

Joseph and Elizabeth had six sons and one daughter:
1. James Tate (28 Mar 1773 - After 1839) moved to Madisonville, Louisiana, before 28 Feb 1812,
. . when he sold land on Bayou Feliah. Thomas joined him in business, as "James Tate and Brother"
. . until they mortgaged considerable lands in St Tammany and Washington Pr, LA, and Pike Co, MS,
. . 28 Jan 1823, to satisfy creditors. The mortgaged property was transferred 12 Feb 1823, on which
. . date, James was listed "of Iberville Parish." This was James' last (of many) land transaction in St
. . Tammany Parish, where he served as judge. His marriage contract was dated 17 Mar 1817 to Anne
. . Corran widow of William Wharton Collins (1778-Jan 1816). She died 20 Sep 1821 in the area that is
. . now Sabine County, Texas, leaving her son George Thomas Wharton Collins (1812-1892). Her
. . daughter with James Tate had already died. James Tate and George were camping near San
. . Augustine. James told George he was going to get some fresh meat, and never returned. Nine-
. . year-old George walked into San Augustine, and was taken in by a lawyer as his apprentice. When
. . he was sixteen, he went to New Orleans and passed the bar exam. While there, he discovered that
. . his stepfather had been appointed his guardian in 1821 and had sold George's inheritance to satisfy
. . his own creditors in 1823. George sued James in St Tammany Parish and won a judgement in
. .1830. But he never received his inheritance, since James was in Texas. George became the first
. . sheriff of Angelina County, Texas, married Martha Ann Bridges in 1837, and raised a large family.
. . . . . James Tate received one league (4428 acres), surveyed 17 Feb 1826, in Leftwich's Grant,
. . Robertson's Colony, Province of Texas, on the west side of the Brazos River above the San Antonio-
. . Nacogdoches Road. He wrote to Stephen F Austin 27 Feb 1827 [S F Austin's Papers #1608] stating
. . that his land was partly on Leftwich's Grant and partly in Austin's Colony, but he had been unable to
. . occupy it due to Indian activity, and proposed a scheme for selling that land to purchase slaves to
. . work on two new leagues in Austin's Colony to raise sugar cane and manufacture sugar. There is no
. . record of Austin's reply. He received another tract in Leftwich's Grant west of the Brazos 19 Feb
. . 1830. He appears on the tax list of Washington County, Republic of Texas, in 1839.
. . 11. Ann E Tate (1820-before 22 Mar 1821) "died at the age of 10 months in the Province of Texas."

3. Robert Tate (14 Dec 1776) moved to New Orleans in 1813/14, purchased land about 1817. No
. . further record has been located.

4. Margaret Tate (14 Sep 1779 - 1842) married 2 Feb 1804 Andrew Kinnear, Jr. (1775-1845) in
. . Rockbridge Co, VA. Andrew's father deeded him a large portion his plantation at Timber Ridge
. . (purchased in 1806 from the widow of Major Samuel Houston who had moved to Tennessee with
. . young Sam) to dissuade him from moving to his land in Ohio. His daughter Hannah moved to that
. . land. Andrew frequently visited Hannah, and it was on his way there in 1845 when, descending Big
. . Sewell Mountain, his horse was frightened by a flock of sheep. Andrew was thrown from the buggy
. . and struck his head on a rock. He died and was buried in Fayette Co, (West) Virginia. [writings of
. . Duncan Lyle Kinnear, 1956] Margaret is buried at Timber Ridge Associate Presbyterian (stone) Church
. . north of Lexington, VA. Margaret and Andrew had 5 children:

Thomas, Ingaba, and their three small children floated down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers to New Orleans, Louisiana, in early 1814. Ingaba died of yellow fever 16 Oct 1814. Thomas then married 14 Feb 1821 Margaret Edwards, widow Lorreins (1788-1864) daughter of Morgan and Margaret Smith Edwards. They lived in St Tammany Parish, Louisiana, on land that is now at the corner of St Tammany, Washington, and Tangipahoa Parishes. They had four children. Margaret Edwards had previously married 1805/6 Samuel Simms of Baton Rouge. They separated but did not divorce. Simms died about 1818. In February, 1816, she married James Lorriens of Covington, LA. Their daughter Delphine Lorriens (1809-1828), was sent to convent school and then married Abram Penn. Their descendants lived in Brandon, Miss. and then moved to Texas. James Lorriens died in 1820.

4. Thomas Edwards Tate (16 Dec 1821 - 21 Nov 1914) married 5 Jan 1845 Mary Vernon Cutrer (1825-1892) daughter of Louis Benjamin and Nancy Ricks Cutrer. They lived on Gretna Farm, three miles east of Osyka, Pike County, Mississippi. Unwilling to fight against his country or his neighbors, he sat out the Civil War. Unwilling to change his money to Confederate, he was the only one left with any after the War, and served as a Republican judge during Reconstruction, well respected by all sides. After Mary's death, he married 27 Nov 1893 her sister Nancy Cutrer, widow of Jesse Westmoreland.
