STICKLIN/STRICKLAND

Several pedigrees of John Strickland, who died in 1672 in Jamaica, New York, have been proposed, some reaching back into antiquity.  Several different collections of children have been listed.   Until I see proof of any of that, I will start with the information in The Great Migration Begins: Immigrants to New England, 1620-1633 by Robert Charles Anderson, 1995, and John Strickland of Long Island and His Sons-In-Law by Herbert F Smith in The American Genealogist Vol XI, (1934) starting at page 81.   The subject of this discussion was only called "Strickland" as a Sergeant in the Pequot Wars in the 1630's.  He was "Stickland" when he applied for Freeman status 19 Oct 1630 and when he was admitted 18 May 1631, as well as in the record of his move from Watertown to Wethersfield in 1635.  His signature was consistently "Sticklin."  The records of Hempstead start by calling him John Sticline in 1644 as a Patentee, and last in 1658 as Mr. Stickline; and this spelling is far more frequent than any other variant.  There is no evidence to connect him to the Strickland Family of Westmoreland  As best I can figure,  the John Strickland of Kendal, Westmoreland, who married Jane Fenwick, and had a son Thwait Strickland, and a daughter Elizabeth Strickland who married John Seaman  - IF there was such a person - was a different John Strickland.  There are Sticklines and Sticklands in Dorset and Surrey; and that would seem a more likely origin for the man commonly known as John Strickland of Long Island.

John Sticklin (c1595-1672) migrated from England to Charlestown, Massachusetts, in 1629, then to Watertown, Wethersfield 1635, Fairfield CT 1640, Hempstead, LI 1644, and Jamaica, LI 1663.  In 1650, Mr Sticklin of Hempstead, by his deputy, Jonas Wood, son-in-law, drew a three hundred acre lot in Southampton.  His will was dated 5 Sep 1672 and proved 13 Dec 1672.  His wife predeceased him.  She may have been named Jane, but the claim that she was Jane Fenwick has been refuted.
