Edward Riley (1747-1855) married 21 Nov 1784 Mary
Elizabeth Wood (1769 - 20 June 1853). In Edward Riley's 1833 Pension
application in Rankin Co, Mississippi, he stated that he was born in Lancaster
County, Pennsylvania, lived in 96 District, South Carolina during the
Revolution, volunteered in 1778, served under General Williamson in Col.
McCrary's Company, as Indian fighter, Dragoon, and spy. He received a musket ball
in his neck, which he carried the rest of his life, and the loss of two fingers
from a sword. He was a wanderer, and would occasionally disappear for a
year or two to live
among the Indians, or other adventures. Edward Ryley was granted 100 acres of land 2 Feb 1768
on Duncan's Creek in South Carolina (near the boundary of current Laurens and
Newberry Counties) This supports his birth in 1747, as he would have been 21
years old then. 300 acres were surveyed for
Edward Ryly in Berkeley County 3 Nov 1772, but were granted to John
McQueen 8 Feb 1773 when Edward did not file the paperwork to take possession.
There was a Miles Ryly who was granted land on the Coosawhatchie River in 1759, of unknown relation.
But this might have been the same Miles Riley who married Elizabeth, widow of
Thomas Weekly of Amelia Township, on 22 Sep 1750 in Orangeburgh by Rev. John
Giessendanner. Miles was witness to the wedding of Freeman Snellgrove of
Amelia and Ann Jenkins, widow, 26 Sep 1751. Then Elizabeth wife of Miles Riley
was a sponsor to the baptism of Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth
Barker of Amelia 10 May 1752. Edward
Ryly is listed in the South Carolina Census of 1790 in Orangeburg District,
South, (one male over 21, one male under 21, and 3 female)
Elizabeth Riley is listed in Abbeville District in 1800, (one male under 10, one
10-16, 2 female under 10, 1 10-16, one 26-45) They apparently moved to
Georgia soon after 1800, as his son William John Riley was born there 12 Mar
1803. 1747 - Lancaster Co, PA - said he was born
there
1768 - Duncan's Creek SC - granted land
1778 - 96 District SC - volunteered for service in the Revolutionary War
1784 - Location undetermined, SC(?) - age 37, married Mary Elizabeth Wood, age
15.

1800 - Abbeville Dist, SC Census - Elizabeth Riley 11000-21010
1803 - Georgia - son William John was born
1805 - Georgia Land Lottery - Elizabeth in Hancock Co, Edward in Franklin Co
and/or Washington Co.
1810 - Georgia Census Lost
1812 - Twiggs Co, GA (Georgia Journal reports court case) Edward owned
land there
1817 - Perry Co, MS - Allen Matthews (son-in-law) bought land; John Shows
Riley (grandson) born
1820 - Perry Co, MS Census not legible
1823 - Perry Co, MS (Tax List) - Edward Rily (over 70 exempt), Edward M Rily

1840 - Jasper Co, MS (Census) - Elizabeth lived with W J Riley, Edward missing
1845 - Rankin Co, MS (State Census) - Edward lived alone
1850 - Lawrence Co, MS (Census) - Elizabeth lived with E M Riley at New Hebron, Edward
missing
1855 - Hardin (Tyler) Co, TX - Great-grandson, then age 6, remembers hearing him
tell stories Edward was living
in
Rankin County, Mississippi, in September 1833, when he gave his deposition
concerning his service in the Revolutionary War. The story goes that after
the judge accepted his claim, he was asked for documentation. He replied
that if his word wasn't good enough for them, they could keep their
pension. Edward's grandson Arthur Matthews remembered standing in his lap
as a small child and putting his finger in the hole in the back of Edward's neck to feel the
musket ball still there. Elizabeth lived with
their son William John Riley in Jasper County in 1840, and with Edward Miles Riley in New Hebron, Lawrence County,
in 1850. The story goes that she became ill, about age 84, and her son
Edward Miles went to get her, from Scott (or Smith) County where she and Edward were
living, and brought her to his home in Lawrence County, 3 miles north of New
Hebron, where she then died and was buried. Edward, at 106, refused to
come, too, so they left him there. Edward
moved frequently, whether Elizabeth did or not, sometimes disappearing for a
year or two. Edward was in Rankin County in 1833, and was listed in the
State Census of 1845 in Rankin County, living alone, and no further documentary record of
him has been found. Three of his grandsons moved to Tyler County, Texas, in
1854. Edward apparently went with
them, also visiting his son William John Riley, who had moved there before
1846. Edward's great-grandchild, Bruce Fairchild (#422 below) born
in 1848, remembered
him. Whether he went back to Mississippi, we do not know, but he is
said to have died in 1855, at the age
of 108, thrown from a horse. But neither of his sons in Texas recorded the date of
his death in their Bibles, and no other record has been found.

0. Census records indicates that there was a son born
between 1784 and 1790, still alive in 1800, and another daughter born between 1784 and 1790 but
not counted in 1800, of whom we have no record, and who were not listed in
Elizabeth's Bible.
