.KAUFELDT

The Eichsfeld region of Thuringia in central Germany was a medieval center of glassmaking, and by the fifteenth century, several families named Kaufholt (Kaufhold, Kaufholz Kauffeld, Kauffelt, Kaufeldt, etc.) were involved in the trade. They were supposed to have descended from a man named Gawioald (pronounced "Kav-yold" in the old Thuringian dialect). In 1504, three men named Kauffolt were taken from Eichsfeld to Hesse, and settled around Großalmarode and Kleinalmarode. They resettled in other parts of Germany by the seventeenth century.
