JEREMIAH SMITH

Jeremiah Smith (c1750-c1805) married Jemima Holley (c1755-about 1829) He served under Francis Marion during the Revolution. I have seen a reported marriage date of 24 June 1772, in Lancaster County, SC, but I have not seen where that date came from. There is a Jeremiah Smith in Greenville Co, S.C., from its formation in 1786 until at least 1800, whom census records show with six children of expected ages. A Jemima Smith was listed on an early but undated membership list of Fork Shoals Baptist Church, founded 1780. There were three married Jeremiah Smiths listed in the Georgia Land Lottery of 1805, in Clarke, Elbert, and Washington counties. All drew blanks. I believe our Jeremiahs Sr and Jr to be two of these. Our Jeremiah, Sr. is reported to have died in Georgia soon after, but no record has been found.

Jemima Smith was listed as a member of Mt. Nebo Baptist Church in Wilkinson Co, Georgia, when it organized the first Sunday in June, 1808. Jemima ("Mrs. Jeremiah Smith") and four children received a passport from Wilkinson Co, Georgia, across Indian lands in March,1810, and moved to what is now Washington Parish, LA. There she was listed in the 1812 St Tammany Pr. tax list and the 1820 census. On 31 Jan 1813, she was a founding member of Mt. Nebo Baptist Church, which in 1816 met in a school house near her land on the east side of the Tangipahoa River, about 9 miles south of the Mississippi State line, as shown on a land plat dated November 1829. That land was sold by Robert Singleton, Jr's heirs to neighbor Joseph Cutrer on 9 Dec 1829.

Some sources list Jeremiah's wife as Jemimah Hollis, daughter of Moses Hollis of Fairfield District, SC. For an explanation of why I reject this identification, see my page on the Hollis Family.
Jemima Holley appears to be the sister of Elias Holley of St Helena Pr, LA, and previously Barnwell District, SC. For my arguments supporting this identification, see my page on the
Holley Family.

Jeremiah G Smith (23 Dec 1773-1843) m.16 Dec 1798 Joanna Dillon (22 Aug 1778-after 1840) probably married in Barnwell District, SC, where the Dillons lived. And their daughter Martha was born in South Carolina in 1802. Connerly's 1909 History of Pike County, reports he moved from Lancaster Dist, SC, in 1808, and was one of the finest mechanics of his time. The story is that after he built his house, the Spanish West Florida surveyors came through and he found he was not in U.S. territory. So he moved across the line to Pike Co, Mississippi, near Dillontown. Later, he heard hammering nearby and went to see who his new neighbor was. It was his brother George, who had come later with their mother. Neither had known where the other was. Jeremiah served in the War of 1812. George married Joanna's sister Clara in 1817.
