Elijah Hastings Burford (9 Feb 1681/2 - 31 Jan 1771) m.10 Nov 1726 Mary Jane Hastings (1686) Both are supposed to have been born in Burford, Oxfordshire, but no record of either family has been found there. They emigrated to Amherst Co, Virginia, 3 Aug 1713, along with her parents. He was a tobacco farmer. His son was:

In the fall of 1788, Daniel, Cary, Milton, and Nancy widow of John moved their families to Mercer County, Kentucky, settling near Fort Harrod, now Harrodsburg.

Milton was born in Amherst County, Virginia, and moved to Mercer County, KY, 1788, then in 1807 to Mauckport, IN, where he ran a business shipping on the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers as far as New Orleans

married Jinny (1748-26 Mar 1814) Shakers' Graveyard, Mercer Co, Kentucky
William Shields was probably the son of Patrick Shields (d.1790) who entered
Pittsfield Co, VA, in 1757, and married Jane, daughter of John Fulton (d.1788)

Cary L. Burford (5 Apr 1806 - 23 Aug 1879) m.29 Jan 1829 Anna Shields (26 Feb 1806 -
25 Apr 1895) Ran a general store in Mauckport, then Anderson, farmed and sold goods for 15 years. In 1847, he was robbed and house burned. He moved to Missouri and other states, settling in Marion Co, IL, in 1854, where he farmed until 1865, when he moved to McLean Co, moving to Farmer City in 1870, where he started C Burford & Sons Mercantile.
