ALLEN MATTHEWS | |||
|
Allen Matthews was born 25 March 1789 in Nash County, North Carolina. Moved with his father Benjamin Matthews to Warren County, Georgia, about 1800, and married Sity Vious Riley about 1812. He volunteered in Chamber's First Regiment of Georgia Militia, in the War of 1812, signing up October 7, 1812 at Point Petre, Ga, for six months; but as of November 30, 1812, he had not joined the company. He and Sity were married by his step-uncle Rev. Vincent Tharp of Stone Creek Baptist Church in Twiggs County. He purchased 79 acres of land in Greene County, Mississippi, 15 Dec 1817, just west of the present town of Rummelston, which fell into Perry County, when it was formed in February, 1820. His brother-in-law Burrell Upchurch either moved at the same time, or was already there. His brother John bought land nearby in November 1818. His Riley in-laws appear first on the tax list of 1822. Allen was taxed on his land in Perry County through 1827, and for one adult male and one slave in Lawrence County starting in 1824, on Whitesand Creek. He purchased 80 acres from Thomas Martin 20 Sep 1828 on Silver Creek in Lawrence County, near what is now New Hebron. He later purchased land in Copiah and Simpson Counties. He donated the land for the Hopewell Meeting House (Church) in Copiah County. After his wife's death, he gave his land and slaves to his children in a series of deeds in Copiah County, dated 20 Nov 1855, and moved in with his oldest son Harmon in Harrisville, Simpson County. He donated the land for Palestine Baptist Church there, and died after 1870. There is a concrete slab toward the rear of their "old cemetery" (which was cleared of stones in the 1920's to enable parking) that has no inscription, next to concrete markers for Harmon's family, which is said to be Allen's grave, or at least the marker from his grave. Allen's date of death was apparently unrecorded in any of his son's Bibles, and the courthouse fires in Mendenhall would have destroyed any record there. Although it is likely that he had nothing to be probated, and so no record may have been made, anyway. He is listed in the 1870 Census, but not in 1880. |

Sity Vious (Cityvius and other spellings) Riley was born 22 Nov 1789, and died on 25 Aug 1854. She was the daughter of Edward Riley (1747-1855) who married 21 Nov 1784 Mary Elizabeth Wood (1769 - 20 June 1853), of New Hebron, Lawrence County, Mississippi. Sity's unmarked grave is thought to be in the private cemetery plot on Seaborn's land in Copiah County. But her date of death was recorded in her brother's Bible. |
