HAWXHURST

Hurst is an old Saxon word for wood, indicating the ethnic origin of the name. John Hawkherst was appointed Abbott of St Augustine in Canterbury 25 Jan 1427.

Christopher Hawxhurst (1521-Aug 1576) m.15 Oct 1550 Elizabeth.  Lived in Shrewsbury, Shropshire. appointed Minister of Saint Chads on the accession of Queen Elizabeth I. Died of plague.

Samson Hawxhurst (1571-1627) received £5 toward his education at Oxford, 28 Apr 1590, from the bailiff's accounts as the son of the deceased pastor Christopher Hawxhurst.  He received his BA from Oxford 25 Jun 1593, and BD from Magdalen Hall 9 Jul 1607.  He was Canon of Litchfield 1607-1627, and Vicar of Nuneaton, Warwickshire 1626-27.

Mary Hawxhurst was born about 1602 in Nuneaton, Warwickshire, and died between 1656 and 1682 in Oyster Bay, Long Island.  She married about 1637 Robert Coles was born about 1597-8 in Sudbury, Suffolk, and died in 1655 in Warwick, Rhode Island. After Robert's death, Mary married Mathias Harvey and moved to Oyster Bay, NY where she died.
