EDWARD SMITH |
Richard Smith married Jane Green . Family tradition says they lived 16 miles from London on a 10-acre farm in a brick house, possibly Durham County. In addition to Edward, they had a daughter Betsey and a son John who was a sea captain. One claim that they were from Scotland, another claim Ireland. I have found nothing about either of them. |

Edward Smith (1754-1828) m.1779 Nancy Black (c.1760-c.1825?) daughter of Samuel Black and __ McGee. One report (without reference) says her name was Nancy Agnes Black, born in Rockbridge Co, VA. Family Tradition says that Edward was drafted and sent to America in 1774. He is supposed to have deserted at the Battle of Bunker Hill. He then served as Lieutenant in the 7th Virginia Regiment, enlisting 17 May 1780 from Goochland Co, VA. Edward and Nancy were married in 1779 some claim in Rockbridge Co, VA, some claim Mercer Co, Kentucky. (But it would be a long way back from Kentucky to Goochland to enlist.) He is listed on Madison Co, KY, Tax rolls 1789, and moved to Harrison County, Indiana, about 1803 as the first white settler. He frequently entertained Territorial Governor William Henry Harrison, and was influential in establishing Corydon as the first State Capitol. Buried in Old Mount Zion United Brethren Cemetery, Heth Twp, Harrison County, Indiana. |
